The Genocide Olympics

April 1st, 2008 · 1 Comment

Remind me again why China was given the high honor of hosting the 2008 Olympics despite it’s known role in refusing to speak out against the genoicide in Sudan (funded largely with China’s oil money) and the bloody crack-down against almost all religious beliefs and most significantly, the Tibetan Monks who have been slaughtered. Naturally, like all cowardly bullies, China says it is all the fault of the Dalai Lama and the monks themselves. Right.

I’ve got mixed feelings about the Chinese hosting the Olympics. On the one hand, the government is repressive and repugnant, although certainly less that it was 40 years ago. And on the other, like it or not, China is going to be a major player in 21st century world events. The 20th century was the American century, and the 21st could be China’s.

We need to give them the chance to transform themselves into a nation that is considered responsible and respectable, just as Japan and Germany succeeded in doing. Otherwise they’ll remain an increasingly large and dangerous loose cannon.
