The Planks in the Platform Are, Ummm…Good Planks?

October 24th, 2008 · 5 Comments

Huffington Post had a blog post about Sarah Palin’s recent interview with Dr. James Dobson of the conservative Christian group, Focus on the Family. Here is a small excerpt but notice Palin’s responses to Dobson, where she seems to not really understand what Dobson means when he refers to the Republican Party Platform:

Dobson:
The Republican Platform is the strongest pro-life, pro-family document to come out of a political party, even more so than the platforms during the campaigns of Ronald Reagan. There are principles there that I’ve been fighting for for thirty, forty years and you are trying to articulate those same principles, aren’t you?

Palin:
Absolutely, and Dr. Dobson thank you so much for recognizing that. This is a strong platform around the planks in this platform that respect life and respect the entrepreneurial spirit of this great country and those things, back to the social issues that are what Republicans, at least in the past, had articulated and tried to stand on.

Now, finally, we have very solid planks in the platform that will allow us to build an even stronger foundation for our country. It’s all good and it’s encouraging. You would maybe have assumed that we would have gotten further away from those strong planks. But no, they’re there, they’re solid, we stand on them and again I believe that it is the right agenda for the country at this time. Very, very clear and contrasted tickets in this election November 4th. People are going to see the clear contrasts, you just go to the planks in our platforms and that’s where you see them.

Dobson:
In your private conversations with Senator McCain, it is your impression that he also strongly supports those views? I know that he did not oppose that platform when it was written. Do you think he will implement it?

Palin:
I do, from the bottom of my heart. I am such a strong believer that McCain believes in those strong planks and we do have good conversations about some of the details of the different planks and what they represent. I’m very heartened that John McCain … he doesn’t want a Vice President who will check the opinions … of me at the door and we talk about some of these and they’re very important. It’s most important though, as you’re suggesting, that Americans know that John McCain is solidly there on those solid planks in our platform that build the right agenda for America.

What?

I would love to have been a fly in the wall in James Dobson’s office when he hung up the phone after that conversation.

Stumble It!

She makes no sense and as you said, her refusal to say anything specific makes it pretty clear she is not aware of what he is referring to.

People say the constant ribbing Palin gets is unfair but really, when she put herself out there for a job she doesn’t understand and apparently never aspired to and when she obviously doesn’t have ANY grasp of national issues, how can she then turn around and blame others for pointing out the obvious? She has some responsibility in all of this, although the McCain camp clearly thinks she should be given a pass.

Well, sure, because, you know, Jesus was, like, a carpenter, and I betcha he used good planks too.

But seriously, I am so grateful to Sarah Palin for demonstrating just how shallow and foolish conservative “thought” has become.

Uh….I think you are being too harsh. I knew what she was talking about. And it seemed to me that she did as well. At least she didn’t say that Roosevelt got on TV during the Depression and reassure everyone by knowing what he was talking about.

Biden has been in National politics for over 30 years. He srews it up royally on an almost daily basis. Every slip of the tongue or moment of distraction exhibited by Palin draws immediate scorn and condemnation from feminists who somehow believe it is their duty to destroy the first female nominated for VP by the Republican Party.

As for “Jesus”, it was the Dems who compared Obama to that man, not Republicans comparing one of their own.

Tell me. Do Dems drink rubbing alchohol when they party? I was wondering, because you really seem to be “into” cheap shots. That image of you drinking Chablis and eating Brie is vastly overstated. Now I picture you chugging Scope Mouthwash for your “high”.

I am not denying biden has said some stupid things- in fact, I think you and I discussed this on another post. My problem with Palin is not so much that at times she may mis-speak, but that she seems to not know what she is talking about and my immediate reaction to the above quote was to think she doesn’t know the specifics of the republican plank or else she probably would have spoken about them. I knew exactly what Dobson meant, but I got the impression Palin did not.

Stacy. I understand your view. It was clear from your initial posting. I am merely expressing the opinion that much of the left (and to an extent media) view that “Palin doesn’t seem to understand what she is talking about” results from “bias”. You choose to look at her statements and see “confusion”. Another person looking at what she is saying sees merely a “clumsy” response rsulting from a poo choice of words, not a fatal intellectual flaw.

Take a look at Palin’s history. she has been in politics at the local to state level for 20 years. She has typically won every office she sought. She has participated in numerous broadcast debates. The public she has served have always given her high marks for her performance in each of her positions. He opponenets have consistently said, “I is easy to underestimate hre. She is much sharper and more intelligent than many think.”

Despite all of the above, people on the left consider her to be “ditzy” and exempletive of “trailer trash”. You mock her and say she seems “bewldered”. But, as if obvious by the views of many others, she is nothing of the kind. You “see” her differently than others see her, and you see her similarly to her “defeated” competitors who universally say, “I blew it. I underestimated her knowledge and resiliance. She is a tough campaigner and a quick study.”

You are making the same mistake that these other critics have made. You may make yorself feel better presuming you are superior to her and she is a “whote” (as some on the left have called her), but you are simply wrong. And you may well regret your underestimation of her. So, laugh while you can.

Meanwhile, there is no mistaking Obama and what he says:

And I hesitate to call anyone “un-American”. And I am not calling Obama “unpatriotic”. But the views he clearly expressed in this interview are obviously “un-American”. In fact, he specifically says they are a break from the policies and role of government envisioned by the founding fathers.

When Obama says, “We have not been radical enough”, it is a bit daunting.
