Dobson Tosses A Grenade to Inflame the Culture War

October 28th, 2008 · 2 Comments

James Dobson of the conservative Evangelical group, Focus on the Family, is pulling out all the stops just days before the election in order to scare the pants off Evangelical conservatives by sending out a mailer which outlines what America would look like in the year 2012 with Obama as President. Here are just a few of the over-the-top, fear-mongering claims that Dobson makes:

• Boy Scouts disband after refusing to allow homosexual scoutmasters to sleep in the same tent as young boys

• First-graders get “compulsory training in varieties of gender identity,” and parents can no longer opt out of school-based sex ed for their kids

• Churches are declared “public accommodations” and forced to offer marriage ceremonies for homosexual couples

• Military must offer “sensitivity training” for troops forced to accept enlisted homosexuals

• The Supreme Court declares that “proselytizing speech” does not have the same protection as other speech, and Christian ministries are banned from college campuses

• Nurses who do not wish to participate in abortions will lose their jobs, and doctors who deliver babies at hospitals must perform abortions or lose their licenses

• The FCC nullifies all restrictions on obscene speech or visual portrayals on TV, and it’s now a 24-hour non-stop diet of explicit porn

• States are allowed to ban guns, and illegal gun-owners face stiff fines or prison terms

• Home-schoolers are forced to use state-approved curricula, and rather than do so, many emigrate to New Zealand or Australia where they may teach without restrictions

• The U.S. troop withdrawal from Iraq prompts a take-over by Al Qaeda, which in turn has carried out terrorist attacks on four U.S. cities

• Russia reclaims most of the old Soviet bloc, including the Baltic states, Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic and Bulgaria while UN & NATO fail to take action

Of course we’ve heard this all before and the whole thing smacks of desperation to me and notably it appeals to the worst in people rather than appealing to the best in people.

Stumble It!

[...] with a statement that a vote for Obama meant “death to Israel” but like so many other right-wing prophets of doom, good ‘ole Joe has no facts or substance to back of this stupid claim. He then went on [...]

How is this appealing to “the worst” in people? Surely you know that EVERY ONE of the above points made by Dobson are policy issues THAT HAVE BEEN PUSHED in communities around America. Each and every one has been implemented in communities, or been the subject of suits brought by left-leaning organizations across the country.

No where in the above did Dobson lie or even exaggerate. He merely stated what the “left” has as an agenda. Now, I use the generic “left” rather widely, knowing that while “leftist groups” have brought such policies to the for, they are not monolithic in support from everyone on the “left”. So I apologize for the “stereotype”.

And Dobson makes the same sweeping generalizattion regarding how those policies “will be the norm” by 2012. Some may not become widely in place till 2016. And it is not as clear that Obama and Biden would agree with all of them, or appease their consituents by embracing each of the policies. What does give us pause, however, is that while Obama served on the board of the Woods Foundation (and others) with Bill Ayers, the foundation did issue grants to groups and for policies that were considered “radical” or “out of the mainstream” and did expressly advocate some of these very same policies. Not all of them of course (since not all are education related), but many.

Add in the “international crisis” and the likelihood that “the public will think that Obama is not dealing with the crisis appropriately”, and we have a mix of “changes” ahead that many might find problematical. Is this “over-the-top”? Hardly. And some consider it “likely”.

We all need to face the prospect of “change” under Obama. He has promised it. And Biden has made guarantees. And some on the “right” are sot supportive of some of the “change” advocated by the “left”. But how is this “appealing to the worst”? Isn’t it being realistic about the extent of potential change? The truth is, NONE of the above would be a surprise in 2012 were it to occur. It may be surprising if ALL occur by then, but even that is not beyond the realm of possibility. And the public “has the right to know”, just like they should be ab le to see the videotape of the toast Obama made at the banquet where he praised Khalidi.
