A Bit Of Humility Can Go A Long Way

March 27th, 2009 · 1 Comment

090326_clintonwithcopters.jpgHillary Clinton just returned from a two day trip to Mexico, where she did something a US Secretary of State has not done for quite a while- injected some humility into her speeches, Q&A’s and demeanor. And guess what? It seems to be helping the United State’s image abroad which will benefit us both short and long term.

Stumble It!

I ell ya, whith Hillary accepting blame, Congress apologizing to Castro, and Obama bowing to kings and talking about American’s “excesses”, we are just looking WONDERFUL! The whole world will just LOVE us real soon, I am sure!

Now, after this wonderful “outreach” to the world, and the new “tone”, what can we expect to achieve that we were unable to achieve in the past?

Will Iran give up nuclear research? Will N. Korea scrap its missile program? Will the UN condemn either of condemn Hamas missile launches? Will the world cooperate more in cracking down on terror? Will the NATO allies send more troops to Afghanistan? Will Chavez stop supporting rebels in Columbia? Will nations help us interdict drug smuggling? Will it reduce illegal immigration? Will Russia and China reduce military spending (as we are reducing ours)? Will the UN or others intervene in Darfur? In Somalia (pirates)? In the Congo?

I am glad previous “enemies” are “pleased” with the US humble approach. I welcome the praise from “nation around the world”. But what will any of that do to make America better or improve conditions in our own nation?

Self-satisfaction is nice. Moral superiority is well and good. Makes you feel all warm inside when people pat you on the back. But that and $4.50 will get you a latte at Starbucks!

Let’s look at one example. We had a Congressional delegation go to Cuba and apologize for past US policy towards Cuba. Cuba is on our list of nations that lack appropriate human rights, Even Human Rights Watch, a left-wing organization (that claims to be non-partisan) condemns Cuba for numerous violations and holding political prisoners.

Why are we apologizing? And to whom should we apologize?
