Last I heard, there were indications that Biden would be given the “Piracy Portfolio”. But its good to see that Hillary is keeping abreast. She knows a thing or two about pirates.

Seriously, any really long-term progress will require significant involvement from the State department. Clearly international laws dealing with piracy need to be reviewed and possibly updated. That will mean a treaty, or at least a UN resolution. Both of which will involve her office.

This is a difficult problem. It won’t be easy to resolve. Hopefully Obama’s conciliatory message and “tone” will help in getting international support for a real solution. I wish them the best of luck in this.

Here is a comical video on present day politics:

I honestly don’t know what the solution is- there is such a huge area for any navy to cover that any effort has to be international in scope.

As I said above, this will be a tough problem for anyone to solve. It will really take lots of international coordination and that will take diplomacy. I was pleased that Obama did not get “out front” on the piracy issue when the ship was first hijacked, and then during the hostage crisis. Just the right thing to do. Take a measured approach.

That said, I was a bit disappointed that Obama decided to come out and tout how the US “will continue to stop piracy on the high seas” and essentially take credit for the rescue of the Captian. It makes him look like an opportunist. Especially since three other ships have been pirated in the last 36 hours. This is no time to be claiming “victory”. It is just one skirmish, not much of a battle. And the problem is a long way from resolution.

A more “thoughtful” press conference/opportunity would have been appropriate.

Hmmm….Have you seen this DHS report?

    http://www.thelibertypapers.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/hsa-rightwing-extremism-09-04-07.pdf

Yikes. The DHS has decided that we can “suspend” enforcing immigration laws and targeting illegal immigrants working for US companies, but they see a growing threat from “right-wing extremists”. Its got me scared! Do they think I am a “right-wing extremist”.

More DHS warnings that veterans may be recruited as terrorists to move against firxt black President.

People come together to protest excessive government spending and hold “tea party” rallys, and the DHS issues a warning about impending insurrection by “right-wing radicals”. The ame label applied by the left (and Dem leaders) to so-called “neocons” in the Republican Party leadership.

Isn’t this a little “over the top”? Especially when it is groups like ACORN and the “anti-Prop 8″ protesters who are actually targeting people , facilities, and government offices?
