I came across this article in the NY Times the other day about how moving towards more of an international consensus on climate change seemed to be pipe-dream just five years ago, particularly with respect to getting some of the world’s biggest polluters on board (ie. China). However, since President Obama has come out [...]

Washington Is Still Washington…
February 28th, 2009 · 3 Comments
…and the powerful elites still jealously guard and take care of their own. This painfully obvious fact is already rearing it’s ugly head just one month into President Obama’s first term in office and while reasonable people can differ as to how to truly “change Washington”, or whether it’s even possible at all, there [...]

About Last Night- Was it good for you?
February 25th, 2009 · 4 Comments
I have to say, Obama’s speech was much better than I expected and there is no doubt he is an excellent communicator, which of course is an asset to any political leader- think FDR, Reagan, even Bill Clinton. Of course, words without action are meaningless, so at some point, he’s going to have to [...]

Interesting…
February 24th, 2009 · 2 Comments
I find this interesting, particularly given Secretary of State Clinton’s dismissive remarks about human rights while she was in China last week. One really can’t talk about Darfur without also talking about China, particularly given the major oil companies in Sudan are largely Chinese companies. So I am not sure how to reconcile [...]

Mileage Tax?
February 20th, 2009 · 1 Comment
It’s a very bad idea. They are considering it here in MA and if they enact it, it takes away some of the incentive to buy electric and other “green” cars, because despite people making the changeover to reduce emissions and reduce gas consumption, they will still be penalized under a mileage tax system.
UPDATE: [...]

Bush’s Other Shameful Legacy…
February 18th, 2009 · 1 Comment
Rolling back as much regulatory oversight as possible, even when it puts consumers at risk. It’s one thing to support big business, but can’t that be done while also demonstrating a respect for ethics and accountability? Bush and Co. shamelessly helped to foster an environment of greed while simultaneously lowering the standard of business [...]

A New Era of Responsibility?
January 19th, 2009 · 1 Comment
There will be much for Obama to tackle in the coming years- a disasterous financial crisis, ongoing security concerns including two wars and a domestic agenda. We hear the word ‘responsibility’ thrown around by conservatives, generally as a weapon against our most vulnerable citizens, but do we have a responsibility to try to create [...]

McCain Gets Failing Grade On Women’s Issues
October 24th, 2008 · 2 Comments
The Economists’ Policy Group on Women’s Issues (EPGWI) issued a ‘report card’ on how the candidates rank on what are generally considered women’s issues.
Obviously, women are not a monolithic group and we can have different views on issues relating to reproductive rights, the environment, the economy, education, war, etc. Nonetheless, given that [...]

Flights of Fancy Part II
September 13th, 2008 · 5 Comments
The Sarah Palin-Charles Gibson interview is coming to us in installments, giving her an opportunity to be prepped by her advisers in between shooting the clips. And despite the political right defending statements that if spoken by a democrat, would have them literally seeing red and decrying her inability to answer very basic questions [...]

McCain Needs to Just Be Himself and Palin Needs to Go Get Cliffs Notes!
September 11th, 2008 · 2 Comments
Arguably, Sarah Palin gives a good speech- at least if you are a far right Republican with sneering contempt of the Fourth Amendment, community organizers, city-folk and any other liberal stereotype coming down the pike. However, it is becoming increasingly clear that John McCain doesn’t really know all that much about Sarah Palin, which [...]
